Double denim: making a comeback?
In recent months, the fashion world has fallen back in love with 90s styling cues, which include brightly coloured jeans, grungy band t-shirts (think Nirvana and Blink 182), chunky ‘creeper’ platform trainers and Doc Martens. This decade was also, of course, the era of double denim, and even respected fashion icons have started to try out this look – most notably, global superstar Rihanna, who recently wore a denim shirt and jeans whilst out and about in New York.
The question is, how can you try out this trend without looking like a member of Steps? The trick is to make sure your denim pieces are classy rather than tacky, to pick the right accessories to complete the look – and to remember that you can mix and match denim colours for a more subtle take on the trend.
For example, if you’re shopping for Voi jeans, why not opt for a pair of black skinny jeans teamed with a basic, loose white t-shirt. Just add a pair of Converse hi-top trainers and a classic blue denim jacket with a sheepskin collar for instant 90s-inspired hipster chic!
Alternatively – if you prefer jeans with a more relaxed fit – you should go for a pair of straight leg beige jeans, worn with a buttoned-up navy shirt for a slightly more preppy look. When it comes to footwear, add leather brogues or boat shoes – and finish off the look with an acid wash denim jacket on top.
So, if you have yet to be convinced by the double denim trend, just remember that it doesn’t have to be brash and in-your-face – jeans can be as sophisticated as you like, provided you choose your pieces carefully.
